Why BIM Is Becoming the Backbone of Modern Construction
In this episode of Construction Conversations, I sat down with Alex Belkofer, Senior Director of Virtual Design & Construction at McCarthy. We covered a lot of ground from career arcs to delivery methods, to data, culture, and the future of BIM/VDC.
But if there’s one thread running through everything Alex said, it’s this:
BIM is no longer a modeling skill it’s becoming the backbone of project delivery.
The days of BIM as a niche, downstream coordination step are long gone. What’s emerging instead is a much more integrated, cross-functional discipline, one that sits at the intersection of how projects are designed, planned, built, and ultimately operated.
Here’s what stood out.
1. Field-First VDC Is Still the Foundation
Alex’s career started in operations, boots on the ground, seeing the job from the point of attack. That perspective informs how he leads digital strategy today.
“We’ve always said it: people first, then process, then technology. You have to hear the field, really hear them, if you want any of this to stick.”
At McCarthy, the VDC team pulls the jobsite into the planning process early. Not as an afterthought. Not as a courtesy. As a requirement.
It’s how they make BIM useful, not decorative.
This field-first mindset is also why McCarthy focuses so much on digital planning, integrated workflows, and cross-functional teaming. Because if the field doesn’t trust the information, nothing else matters.
It’s not ‘BIM for BIM’s sake.’ It’s BIM as a way of removing chaos before it hits the site.
2. Why BIM Maturity Still Varies Wildly Across the Industry
I asked Alex why some GCs treat BIM like a checkbox while others like McCarthy are running digital delivery at a strategic level.
His take was refreshingly honest:
“It takes finesse to modernize business practices. This is a cultural shift as much as it is a technical one.”
There are still design partners who disclaim their own models. Still owners who contract traditionally but expect digital outcomes. Still contractors who adopt tech without updating process.
The result? A spectrum of BIM maturity that ranges from “Hollywood BIM” to lifecycle-driven digital delivery.
Where companies land on that spectrum often comes down to:
leadership buy-in,
willingness to change workflows, and
the ability to connect tech to business value.
3. Building From the Model Is Becoming Real
For years, “building from the model” felt more like a conference talking point than something happening on real jobs. But that’s changing.
Alex sees this shift firsthand:
“I’ve had superintendents say, ‘We live and die by the model.’ That’s when you know trust has shifted.”
And that trust matters, because the model isn’t just for coordination anymore, it’s becoming the plan. Teams use it to sequence work, check logistics, verify quality, and guide what actually gets built. Trade partners are fabricating from it. Owners FM teams are asking for it. And more often than not, the model is replacing the scattered mix of disaggregated data we’ve relied on for years.
As that shift accelerates, the GC’s job changes too. It’s less about “running BIM” and more about keeping the digital workflow aligned, making sure platforms talk to each other and that what’s in the field matches what’s in the model.
That’s why VDC isn’t just about modeling and clash anymore. It’s about orchestration bringing the right information to the right people at the right time so the job can move without friction.
4. The Connected Jobsite Is Finally (Slowly) Coming Together
We talked about tools like Revizto, OpenSpace, Dusty Robotics, Trimble, and ACC and how the era of siloed point solutions is ending.
Alex summarized it well:
“The environments of 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D they’re becoming inseparable.”
The new jobsite is defined by flow:
flow of data
flow of updates
flow of field conditions
flow of design changes
flow of fabrications
flow of decisions
The VDC function is increasingly the connective tissue keeping that digital thread intact.
McCarthy’s focus is on systemizing that experience so every project, every team, every partner encounters a consistent digital workflow instead of a one-off tech experiment.
5. Digital Delivery Is Becoming a Business Strategy, Not a Specialty
One of the most interesting parts of the conversation was the future of BIM/VDC careers. Alex sees the role expanding quickly. “We’re moving into this era of digital delivery… deeply tied to business operations strategy,” he said.

This isn’t modeling or coordination anymore. It’s designing digital workflows, shaping delivery strategy, influencing risk, and connecting design, build, and operate into one continuous process.
We already see this in the rise of roles like Director of Digital Delivery and Head of Construction Technology. The natural extension is an eventual C-level digital role (Chief Digital Officer), someone responsible for integrating data, systems, and strategy across the business.
The future of construction careers looks far more like systems integration than drafting or clash detection, and that shift is already happening.
Conclusion
Alex’s point is straightforward: the future of BIM isn’t about cleaner models, it’s about tightening the connection between digital planning and real-world execution. The GCs who pull ahead won’t be the ones chasing every new tool, but the ones who treat digital delivery as core to how they run the business.
This is where BIM is heading: from something a VDC team “does” to the operational backbone of the entire project. As fabrication moves upstream, owners get smarter about data, and field teams trust the model more than the sheets, this stops being optional.
Some firms will wait for the industry to force their hand. The smart ones are already rebuilding around this shift.
